america want to resist hugo chavez, the castro brothers and deepen ties with the united states on trade, energy and security. but in all of these places just as in the middle east the question is asked, where does america stand. i know many americans are asking, why us? i know many americans are asking whether our country today with our ailing economy and massive debt and after 11 years of war is still capable of leading. i believe that if america doesn't lead others will. others who don't share our interests and our values and the world would grow darker for our friends and for us. america's security in the cause of freedom cannot afford four more years like the last four years. i'm running for president because i believe the leader of the free world has a duty to our citizens and to our friends everywhere to use america's great influence wise ly without false pride and also to shape events in ways that secure our interests, further our values, prevent conflict and make the world better -- not perfect, but better. our friends and allies across the globe don't want less american leadership. the

governor romney and i, we both agree that we've got to boost american energy production. one of the things i suspect governor romney and i probably agree on is getting businesses to work with community colleges so they are setting up their training programs. >> do you agree, governor? >> let me finish my point. >> what's the strategy there? why try to raise romney up to his level? >> yeah, you know, it was one of those moments where i was watching this on twitter where people who supported the president were literally having their heads exploding. this is where you see the obama camp sometimes reading too much into what makes him more popular and likable. i think they see, well, he's a guy willing to compromise and be conciliatory. they didn't want to sacrifice likability in order to go against mitt romney, but unfortunately that's not how you debate. i think they need to go back and stop trying to shore up what's already there, that the president is likable. the president is president so he doesn't have to reinforce presidential sort of bearing. he needs to litigate the

we can't afford to gut our investments in education or clean energy or research and technology. we can't afford to roll back regulations on wall street banks or oil companies or insurance companies. that is not a jobs plan. it's not a plan to grow our economy. it's sure not a plan to strengthen our middle class. we have been there, we have tried that. we're not going back, we are moving forward. we have got a different view about how we create jobs and prosperity in this country. this country doesn't just succeed when just a few are doing well at the top. it succeeds when the middle class gets bigger. our economy doesn't grow from the top down, it grows from the middle out. we don't believe that anybody is entitled to success in this country, but we do believe in opportunity. we believe in a country where hard work pays off and responsibility is rewarded and everybody is getting a fair shot and everybody is doing their fair share and everybody is playing by the same rules. that's the country we believe in, that's what we've been fighting for for the last four years, that's what

president biden is a very experienced debater, but i think his challenge here is to have a little bit of energy, to have a smile, but to also survive against paul ryan, who though inexperienced on the national stage, is quite intelligent. i think we'll be bringing a lot of numbers, a lot of analysis to the debate. but biden has that populous touch. i think it will really help him. >> it really is going to be fascinating to watch on thursday and talk about as well. who do you think is going to win that thing, robert? >> i think it's going to be a draw. it's more important for paul ryan to come out with that threshold of being in executive office. >> nia-malika? >> i got to go draw too, play it safe. >> you guys. you newspaper people. keith, i know your answer. i'll ask you anyway. >> biden is clearly going to win this debate. he's a great debater. ryan is going to be on the defensive. >> thank you so much. appreciate your time, as always. >> thanks, craig. >> i'll be back next weekend for more coverage of all of the developments on the campaign trail. it is all here on msnbc, the place for polit
